If I Place Multiple Start Events, Will Multiple Tokens Move Simultaneously?

Question.

If I place multiple start events in a single Workflow App, will multiple tokens start moving simultaneously when a Case is started?

Answer.

No. Only one token ever starts moving per Case.

You can place multiple start events (such as [Message Start Event (Form)] and [Timer Start Event]) in a single App. However, this means that “there are multiple triggers (entry points) for starting a Case.” The Case that is actually started begins from the one start event that was triggered, and a single token starts moving from there. Multiple tokens will never start moving simultaneously from multiple start events.

Therefore, even if you place a start event in each of different swim lanes, two paths will not proceed in parallel at the same time.

If you want processing to proceed in parallel within a single Case, use a branching gateway (AND/OR) to split the token and a corresponding merging gateway to join them. For detailed instructions, please refer to the learning content “Achieving Parallel Processing“.
